Getting DJ gigs can sometimes be tough – it requires a lot of hard work, dedication, networking and passion. And sometimes it’s more about who you know, rather than how fire your mixing game is. However there are some creative ways to get sets and get noticed in the scene. One way is to throw your own club night. Let’s discuss a few reasons why this is a great idea!
1. You’re Guaranteed a Set
Being the promoter and host guarantees you a set! You can even take the headline slot if you’re so inclined – although it can be considered poor etiquette to do this sometimes. The best bet is the closing set (after all, you’re there ‘til stumps!) or somewhere in between.
2. You Choose the Vibe
When you throw your own party in a club, you get to choose everything! From the décor, to the entry fee, to the type of music played. This is good experience because it helps to know what works and what doesn’t.
3. You Book the Other DJs
This is a great way to network and potentially get gigs further down the line. Many DJs also dip into promotion, for the very same reasons that you are now – in order to get their name out there and get their mixes heard. By booking similar DJs you open the door for them to return the favour in the future!
4. You Never Know Who’s Going to Be There!
Clubs are a great place to network. Who knows who is going to be coming to your night?! There could be promoters, record label people, music producers and all other sorts of entertainment folk. As mentioned before, networking is so important in this scene. It might be worth getting a business card made up, so you can hand it out to the right people you meet along the way.
5. Your Friends Will Love You
There’s nothing cooler than walking up to a club, bypassing the door staff and getting in because you’re on “the list”. Invite all your friends; give them free entry under the condition that they bring a few of their own friends. More people through the door equals more chance of success – and more importantly, it means more people dancing to your set!
6. It Can Become a Regular Event
If your club night is a success, there’s a good chance the venue will ask you back – after all they’re making the money over the bar. A regular event means that you become established in the scene, and you’re guaranteed a set every month!
